A study on Psychology reveals that more than 10% of the adults have phobias of some form or the other. In fact, a study of the phobias may be very extensive because you should study why people have such phobias, explanations about them, the evolutionary theories that may have been responsible for them, how people who have problems of phobias behave and so on. But, the fact is that the problems of phobias can be treated successfully.
Different Kinds Of Phobias
People affected by this phobia fear spiders. In general, women are more affected by this problem than men.
Ophidiophobia is said to have affected a person if he or she fears snakes. This fear is mainly due to evolutionary causes. Sometimes, personal experiences and cultural influences may also trigger this phobia.
If a person fears heights, he is said to have been affected by Acrophobia. Psychology experts say that due to this phobia, these people may have anxiety attacks and they may avoid high places.
This is nothing but fearing situations in which the affected people may have a wrong notion that they cannot escape. Situations like crowded areas, vast open spaces, etc. may trigger panic attacks in the affected people. So, these people may try to avoid crowded places and other situations that may cause these attacks. Some of them may refuse to leave their homes also.
These people fear dogs because they may have had personal experiences of being chased or bitten by dogs.
Thunder, lightning, etc. may cause fear in people who have been attacked by this phobia. This phobia is also called Brontophobia. Other names of this phobia are Tonitrophobia, Ceraunophobia, etc.
People who have this phobia are afraid of injections. Most of these people avoid injections and in some people, this phobia remains untreated till the end.
These people fear all types of social situations. They avoid social events, parties and even places where such events or functions are held. Psychology experts say that such social events may cause anxiety attacks in these people.
When a person is afraid of flying, he or she is said to have been affected by this phobia. Experts in psychology adopt Exposure Therapy slowly and gradually to treat this phobia.
People who have been affected by this phobia fear germs, dust and dirt. This phobia is closely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder because the affected people may keep washing their hands and feet quite often. If they are not able to do so, they may start worrying whether they will be affected by infections.
Some of these phobias may not affect the lives of the affected people. But, there are a few phobias that can seriously influence or impact the psychology and the lives of these people. If treatment is given on time, these phobias can be cured easily.
Psychology experts opine that Exposure Therapy can be suitable for many of these phobias. But, in those fears that involve snakes, dogs, etc., the affected people should be suitably educated about their unreasonable fears to be able to understand their psychology.
