People may know what Autism is. They may also have heard about Asperger’s Syndrome. But it is unlikely that they may be knowing about the different forms of Autism. The problem is that if people do not have enough knowledge about these disorders, they may not recognize the problem in their children on time with the result that the problem will get continue to remain even during their adulthood.
Not being able to connect with others
The main difference between Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism is that those with the former may not be able to connect easily with others. Researchers are still not certain about the causes of Asperger’s Syndrome. But they agree that there can be a genetic cause for the problem. People with this disorder obsess or focus on unusual things. Another challenge they may face may be communication. But certain folks may be extremely talented or even brilliant in a particular area though it cannot be said that it is typical.
Problems in areas like socialization, behavior range and communication
Those with Asperger’s syndrome may have difficulties in three areas and they are socialization, behavior range and communication. But what differentiates Asperger’s Syndrome from Autism is that in those with Autism problem, there may be a language delay or there may be a delay in talking also. The IQ of these folks may be less than average. On the other hand, those with the problem of Asperger’s syndrome may have average or above-average IQ and they may not have any difficulties in speaking which means they may start talking well within the normal age range.
Those with AS may know that they lack social skills
Another issue that can be found in people with Asperger’s Syndrome may be they may be affected by depression. But in the case of those with Autism, they may live in their own world on which they may be focusing constantly. So, they may not be aware of the things they may be missing. Folks with Asperger’s Syndrome may know that they are missing out on the desired levels of social interactions.
Experts are of the opinion that those with Asperger’s Syndrome can lead a normal and valuable life provided they get the right kind of support. A number of people with this problem expect that others should understand and accept them. They may not like to be treated. A number of people with Asperger’s Syndrome may have very good memory and so, they may look for details and may focus on the things they like for long durations.
Diagnosis and treatment
While diagnosing or treating people with Asperger’s Syndrome, each case has to be considered separately because every patient may be unique. So, doctors should evaluate each patient and use suitable therapies for treating them.
Especially, parents should focus on developing the social skills of these children because due to lack of these skills, there are chances of they being affected by depression. Since these children may themselves know that they lack in social skills, they may cooperate with their parents in the process of acquiring these skills.
